Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
WHAT IS MLD?
MLD is a therapy where the therapist employs light, repetitive movements over the surface of the skin. These movements encourage the flow of lymph (involved in the body's immune system).
WHY DO WE WANT TO IMPROVE LYMPHATIC FLOW?
Lymph contains white blood cells which are important to fight infection, disease. If we encourage good lymphatic flow, the body's effectiveness dealing with cell debris and contaminants is increased. Fluid balance is better regulated, and the health of connective tissue is maintained.
HOW DOES MLD WORK?
The light touch of MLD is rhythmic, specific in direction and repetitive. The vessels that take up fluid that becomes lymph from our tissues, are situated just below the surface of the skin. If we stimulate these tiny vessels we can increase uptake of lymph, kick starting the chain of flow.
The technique is extremely relaxing. Relaxation alone can reduce pain and anxiety. We have to consider that stress and anxiety are thought to provoke/promote infection. MLD decongests tissues, stopping chronic inflammation. We are cleansing the connective tissues, encouraging the lymphatic system to 'mop up'.
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN MLD ALLEVIATE?
Some conditions may find MLD a more beneficial alternative to massage. A person may find the technique provides better relaxation. MLD can be effective for some complaints as the gentleness causes no inflammation.
Try MLD for conditions such as:
- Arthritis
- sinusitis
- headaches/migraine
- multiple sclerosis
- chronic fatigue syndrome/ M.E.
- fibromyalgia
- tinnitus
- post injury
- post surgery i.e dental implants, hip replacement, arthroscopy
- rotator cuff issues
- back pain
- asthma
- C.O.P.D
- carpal tunnel
- R.S.I.
NOTE
Anyone seeking MLD for lymphoedema treatment, or who has had their lymphatic system compromised by e.g surgery, treatment, illness, must see a therapist fully qualified in all aspects of MLD. (At least Vodder level 2 and 3)
